One Dumbbell. 30 Moves. Full Body!

You really don't need a room full of equipment to get a fantastic strength workout.

For today's 40 Minute One Dumbbell Full Body Workout, we're stripping things right back.

You need just ONE dumbbell.

That's it!

We'll work through 30 different exercises, and every exercise combines movements to challenge more than one area of the body.

Think Goblet Squat to Chest Press and other 2-in-1 combinations that allow us to work the legs, glutes, shoulders, arms, back, chest and core while also challenging balance and coordination.

Better still, the entire workout is all standing and no jumping.

Why Train With Just One Dumbbell?

One of the things I love about single-dumbbell workouts is their simplicity.

You don't need a huge collection of weights or complicated equipment to challenge your body.

Using one dumbbell also opens up lots of interesting exercise combinations.

Instead of isolating one small area at a time, we can combine movements and recruit several muscle groups within one exercise.

For example, combining a lower-body movement with an upper-body exercise requires your legs, upper body and core to work together.

That's much closer to how our bodies actually operate in everyday life.

We don't live our lives sitting on a machine isolating one muscle — we bend, lift, carry, stabilise, reach and move several joints simultaneously.

That's why full-body combination exercises can be such a useful part of functional strength training.

What Muscles Will We Work?

Pretty much everything! 😂

Across the 30 exercises we'll challenge:

🦵 Legs & Glutes

Squatting, hinging and other lower-body movements help strengthen the major muscles of the legs and hips.

💪 Shoulders & Arms

Our combination exercises bring plenty of work into the shoulders, biceps and triceps.

💪 Back

Rows and pulling patterns help strengthen the muscles of the upper and mid back.

❤️ Chest

Pressing movements give the chest some attention without needing to move onto the floor.

🔥 Core

Your core has to stabilise your body throughout many of our standing combination movements.

That means you're not only working your core when an exercise is labelled "abs".

It's working throughout the session to help control your trunk and transfer force between your upper and lower body.

Benefits of Full Body Strength Training

Resistance training becomes increasingly important as we get older.

Regular strength training can help:

✔️ Maintain and build muscle

✔️ Improve muscular strength

✔️ Support bone health

✔️ Improve balance and stability

✔️ Maintain physical independence

✔️ Improve everyday functional fitness

✔️ Strengthen the core✔️ Improve muscular endurance

You also don't necessarily need to train for hours.

A well-designed full-body workout allows us to challenge all the major areas of the body within one session.

🛍️ What Dumbbell Should You Use?

Choose a dumbbell that provides a challenge while still allowing you to perform every exercise with good control.

Because we're using combination movements, the weight that's appropriate for your legs may feel very different once your upper body becomes involved.

That's absolutely fine.

Reduce the load whenever necessary.

Why I Like 2-in-1 Exercises

Combination exercises don't just make the workout efficient.

They also give us another useful challenge: coordination.

When your lower body is performing one movement while your upper body performs another, your brain has to organise the sequence.

Meanwhile, your core has to stabilise you.

That combination of strength, balance, control and coordination makes this style of workout particularly useful for overall functional fitness.
