You asked for a longer Cardio Tabata... and I may have got a little carried away!

After the fantastic response to my 30 Minute No Repeat Cardio Tabata Workout, so many of you asked for a longer version that I decided not just to add another few minutes — but to create an entire 55-minute cardio challenge featuring 12 completely different Tabatas!

This workout has a little bit of everything.

We'll power walk, box, kickbox, work our abs, challenge our agility, move laterally, sculpt our muscles and enjoy plenty of full-body cardio along the way.

And despite all that variety, there's one thing you won't be doing:

Repeating exercises!

This workout is completely no repeat, no jumping and all standing, making it perfect if you want a longer cardiovascular challenge without high-impact exercise or floor work.

So grab some water — you're definitely going to want it for this one! — and let's get moving.

What To Expect From This Workout

Rather than spending 55 minutes performing one style of cardio, today's workout is divided into 12 individual Tabatas, each with its own training focus.

Workout Structure

  • Duration: 55 Minutes

  • 12 Different Tabatas

  • Completely No Repeat

  • All Standing

  • No Jumping

  • No Floor Work

  • No Equipment

  • Low Impact

  • Full Body Cardio

  • Warm Up Included

  • Cool Down Included

Each new Tabata changes the focus, which means just as you're getting used to one style of training, we're moving on to something completely different.

Today's 12 Tabatas

1. Warm Up

We'll begin by gradually preparing the body for exercise, increasing our range of movement and gently raising the heart rate.

2. Metabolism Boosting Cardio

Now it's time to pick up the pace.

We'll introduce bigger full-body movements that recruit plenty of muscle and start turning up the cardiovascular challenge.

3. Side Step Cardio

Next we're moving laterally.

Side-to-side movement gives us a different challenge from traditional forward and backward walking patterns while working the muscles responsible for hip stability and control.

4. Full Body Cardio

Arms and legs come together for a selection of big, dynamic movements designed to keep your whole body working.

5. Boxing Cardio

Time to get those fists moving!

Punching combinations add plenty of upper-body involvement while challenging coordination and keeping the cardio going.

6. Cardio & Abs

We'll maintain the cardiovascular element while introducing movements that ask a little more from your waist and core.

7. Agility Cardio

Here's where things get quick!

Faster footwork and changes of direction challenge coordination, reaction time, balance and movement confidence.

8. Power Walking Cardio

Back to one of my favourites.

Strong, purposeful walking patterns give us another opportunity to elevate the heart rate without needing to jump.

9. Kickboxing Cardio

Punches, kicks and knees combine for an energising full-body Tabata that's always great fun.

10. Sculpting Cardio

We'll slightly change the emphasis here, introducing more controlled toning movements while still keeping the body moving.

11. Fun Cardio

One final burst!

This Tabata is all about enjoying the movement and giving whatever you've got left before we start bringing things down.

12. Cool Down

You made it!

We'll gradually reduce the intensity, allow the heart rate to settle and finish our 55 minutes feeling fabulous.

Why I Love Mixing Different Styles Of Cardio

Your body is capable of moving in far more ways than simply forwards and backwards.

Throughout today's workout we're changing direction, changing speed and changing movement patterns.

You'll move:

  • Forwards and backwards

  • Side to side

  • Through rotational patterns

  • With quick footwork

  • With large upper-body movements

  • Through walking patterns

  • Through boxing and kickboxing combinations

This creates a much more varied movement experience than simply repeating the same cardio exercise for an extended period.

And because every Tabata has a different focus, there's always a new mini-goal to work towards.

Instead of thinking, "I've still got 40 minutes left!", you can simply concentrate on finishing the Tabata you're currently doing.

Then we reset and move on to something completely different.

The Benefits Of No Repeat Training

There are times when repetition is incredibly valuable — particularly when we're learning strength exercises or trying to improve a particular movement.

But no-repeat cardio offers some different benefits.

The constant variety can help challenge:

  • Coordination

  • Agility

  • Balance

  • Reaction time

  • Movement memory

  • Body awareness

Your brain has to continually process new movement information and communicate that information to your body.

That makes workouts like this a lovely combination of physical and mental challenge.

There's also the simple motivational benefit:

Once you've completed an exercise, it's gone!

For anyone who gets bored easily during longer cardio sessions, that can make 55 minutes feel remarkably manageable.

Why Include Lateral Movement?

One feature you'll notice throughout this workout is that we don't spend all our time moving forwards and backwards.

We also move side to side.

Everyday life can be very forward-dominant. We walk forwards, climb stairs forwards and spend a lot of time sitting.

Including lateral movement allows us to challenge the body in another plane of motion and recruit important muscles around the hips.

These muscles contribute to:

  • Hip stability

  • Balance

  • Pelvic control

  • Walking mechanics

  • Changes of direction

Training movement variety becomes particularly valuable as we get older because maintaining confidence in different movement patterns helps support functional fitness.

Low Impact Doesn't Mean Low Effort

There's absolutely no jumping in today's workout, but don't mistake that for an easy 55 minutes!

You can create plenty of cardiovascular intensity while keeping one foot connected to the floor.

Larger movements, stronger arm actions and a faster pace all increase the demand placed on your body.

That's what makes low-impact cardio so adaptable.

If you need to reduce the intensity, make your movements smaller and slow things down.

If you're feeling strong and want more of a challenge, increase your range, use those arms and put a little more energy into each movement.

You control the intensity.

Benefits Of This 55 Minute Cardio Workout

Improve Cardiovascular Fitness

A longer session of continuous movement challenges your heart and lungs and can help improve aerobic fitness over time.

Build Stamina & Endurance

Fifty-five minutes gives you the opportunity to practise sustaining activity for longer while managing your effort throughout the workout.

Increase Your Daily Energy Expenditure

A longer full-body cardio session can make a meaningful contribution to your overall daily calorie expenditure.

Challenge Your Whole Body

With walking, boxing, kickboxing, abs, agility and sculpting all included, you'll recruit muscles throughout your upper and lower body.

Improve Coordination & Agility

The constantly changing movement patterns ask your brain and body to work together throughout the session.

Support Balance & Movement Confidence

Changes of direction and varied footwork challenge your ability to control your body in different positions.

Boost Mood & Energy

There is something wonderfully satisfying about finishing a longer workout — particularly one with great music and plenty of variety.

What About Fat Burning?

Cardio workouts increase your energy expenditure, which can contribute towards fat loss when combined with an appropriate overall nutrition and exercise programme.

But no single workout can selectively "burn fat" from a particular part of your body.

What today's workout can do is help you improve your fitness, expend energy, build stamina and maintain an active lifestyle — all valuable pieces of the bigger picture when your goal includes managing body composition.
