Want to work your waist and core while getting a fantastic cardio workout at the same time?

This 25 Minute Waist Shaping Cardio Workout combines energetic low-impact cardio with standing core-focused movements to challenge your cardiovascular fitness while giving plenty of attention to the muscles around your waist and midsection.

We'll use a fun Tabata-style format, moving through exercises incorporating rotation, knee drives, side bends, reaches and large full-body movements.

There are no crunches, no planks and no getting down onto the floor.

Everything is all standing and completely no jumping, making this a brilliant option when you want an energetic cardio session with an extra core focus.

And although we're calling this our Waist Shaping workout, don't worry — the rest of your body isn't getting the day off! 😂

Your arms and legs will be working hard too as we keep the whole body moving.

What To Expect From This Workout

Today's session is organised into six Tabata-style blocks.

Workout Structure

  • Duration: 25 Minutes

  • Warm-Up Tabata

  • 4 Main Cardio Tabatas

  • Cool-Down Tabata

  • Waist & Core Focus

  • All Standing

  • No Jumping

  • No Floor Exercises

  • No Equipment Required

We'll gradually prepare the body during our warm-up before moving into four faster-paced cardio sections.

Each main Tabata combines cardiovascular exercise with movements specifically chosen to involve the trunk, waist and core.

Then we'll gradually bring everything back down during our final cool-down section.

Can Exercise Really Shape Your Waist?

This is an important distinction to make.

We cannot choose where our bodies lose fat.

Performing hundreds of abdominal exercises won't specifically remove body fat from your waist, just as performing endless leg exercises won't selectively remove fat from your thighs.

Body-fat reduction happens across the body and is influenced by factors including overall energy balance, genetics and lifestyle.

What we can do is strengthen and condition the muscles underneath.

And that's exactly what we're concentrating on today.

Working The Obliques

Your core consists of much more than the muscles we typically associate with a six-pack.

The obliques run along the sides of the abdomen and contribute to movements including rotation and lateral flexion — bending to the side.

That's why today's workout incorporates plenty of:

  • Controlled rotation

  • Side bends

  • Cross-body movement

  • Knee drives

  • Side reaches

  • Diagonal movement patterns

  • Standing abdominal exercises

Rather than isolating one muscle, we're encouraging the trunk to move and stabilise in several different directions.

Why Combine Cardio And Core Training?

We could lie on a mat and perform abdominal exercises.

But we can also challenge our core while we're standing and moving.

Combining the two gives us a wonderfully efficient workout.

The larger cardio movements help raise your heart rate and challenge cardiovascular fitness, while our rotational and waist-focused patterns ask the muscles around the trunk to contribute at the same time.

That means we're training cardio and core simultaneously rather than treating them as two completely separate workouts.

The Benefits Of Standing Core Exercises

Standing abdominal exercises can be particularly useful because your core has to work while the rest of your body is moving.

In everyday life, that's usually exactly what happens.

Your core helps stabilise and control your trunk while you walk, reach, lift, turn and change direction.

Standing exercises also allow us to incorporate more full-body movement than many traditional floor-based abdominal exercises.

And if you simply don't enjoy crunches or planks?

Problem solved! 😁

Why Rotation Matters

Our bodies don't only move forwards and backwards.

We also rotate, reach diagonally and move from side to side.

Today's workout incorporates these different movement patterns while asking you to maintain control through your trunk.

As always, more movement isn't automatically better.

Keep your rotation comfortable and controlled rather than trying to twist as far as possible.

Benefits Of This Waist & Cardio Workout

Strengthen Your Core

Standing core movements challenge the muscles around your trunk while you continue moving.

Work Your Waist & Obliques

Rotation, lateral movement and side bends give additional attention to the muscles along the sides of your torso.

Improve Cardiovascular Fitness

Our four main cardio Tabatas keep the whole body moving and elevate the heart rate.

Increase Stamina

Regular cardiovascular exercise can improve your ability to sustain activity for longer.

Improve Coordination

Combining different arm, leg and trunk movements provides a great brain-body challenge.

Burn Calories

Full-body cardiovascular exercise increases energy expenditure and can contribute to overall weight-management goals when combined with appropriate nutrition.

Improve Functional Movement

Training the core while standing and moving reflects many of the ways we actually use these muscles during everyday life.

How Hard Should You Work?

The beauty of low-impact exercise is that you can change the intensity considerably without adding jumping.

Want to work harder?

Increase the pace or make your movements larger.

Need to bring the intensity down?

Reduce your speed and range of movement.

Throughout the workout, aim for an effort that feels challenging for you while still allowing you to maintain good technique.
